16 people killed as flood sweeps through campsite

Flash floods have swept through a campground in Arkansas, killing at least 16 people as they slept and leaving an estimated 73 missing.

A wall of water, triggered by heavy rains that swelled the Little Missouri River to 20 feet, caught victims asleep in their tents at the Albert Pike campground in the Ouachita Mountains west of Little Rock.

The death toll hit 16, according to a spokesman for Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, who travelled to the scene of the flooding.

One survivor expressed horror at the fact that children were among the dead.

I got a bunch of boo-boos and stuff but it ain’t got nothing compared to the little babies that were screaming hard in the river, ‘Help me, Help me.’ We just couldn’t reach them, we had to climb about forty feet in a tree to save our own lives. We were just clinging on to dear life, Angela Chris said.

Television images showed cabins reduced to rubble and mobile homes and vehicles overturned by the waters.

The quickness that a flash flood comes up no you its unbelievable. It’s probably the scariest thing I’ve ever been in, in my life. We lost everything, all our tents, grills. We were lucky to get out with our lives. My heart goes out to the family and people that lost, said survivor Chad Banks.

Authorities are using boats and helicopters to search the remote area for survivors.

There are thought to have been up to 300 people in the camp ground.

“I’ll check with that ranger.” We pull up to a big, grinning Andy Taylor of Mayberry, USA type who drawls, “A bear’s been yonder in them woods so best keep the youngins near.”. That night, after rowing a rented, leaky canoe around the lake, we cook steaks on a grill that, in the twilight, we’d not first noticed was thickly coated with unidentifiable animal hair. Dishes done, and wet clothes drying on a line that runs from the car-roof to a tree, we set-up the pop-top, make-up the beds and call our sons back in. Mind has a ¼” diameter tree branch rammed through his skin and half up in his leg.. “Get in!! Get in!!”. I can’t get the pop-top down and we take curves on two-squealing tires as we race to the ER on the opposite side of the lake. The comforter has loosen and is chasing alongside us like a ghost with a black fan belt around its neck. The line of clothes waves from the opposite side. At the hospital they take my son in before a man who had a car fall on his chest. A motorcycle cop finally catches up with me and delivers a ticket for the flying comforter and clothes, plus driving with the raised pop-top that sheared off some tree limbs. “And you knocked over a mail-box,” he rips off the ticket and forks-it-over between his two disapproving fingers.. To make up for my son’s stitches and inoculations we have hot fudge sundaes at an outdoor patio restaurant downtown. When Tracy pushed her folding-chair back it collapses and slides off the patio with her holding on to it, over the side, and 6′ down onto the roadway. The ambulance arrives and we return to the ER and are welcomed like regular customers..

When camping in hot weather you can bring the same gear as you would normally take on a campout, except your bedding should be lighter and cooler. What I mean by this is, bring a light nylon sleeping bag, or a bed sheet and a couple of blankets.. A couple of summers ago I had the opportunity to be a camp leader at a week long girl’s camp that our church holds every summer. It was my oldest daughters 4th year going to camp, so I was excited to go along and share the camp experience with her. But I was not looking forward to sharing a tent with other leaders whom I did not know very well. But luckily we owned a couple of camping hammocks, so I took one of those along to use instead. I had never actually slept in one before, so it was a totally new experience for me. Here are some pros and cons that I discovered while using camping hammocks that summer.. Pros:.

1. Easy to set up, you just need a couple of trees, though I have heard of innovative people using other natural items when trees are scarce. But we live in the wooded Northwest, so we have plenty of trees. Almost all brands of camping hammocks come with special straps that make setting up easy, with very little knowledge needed of special knots.
2. Comfortable. No sloping ground, or rocks or sticks in the back. Especially nice for staying off the ground in wet weather!
3. Lightweight. All camping hammocks I have seen are small and compact, great for hiking where weight is an issue.
4. Leave No Trace shelter. Unlike a regular tent where you may have to level the ground, use stakes or establish trenches in rainy weather, none of this is needed with camping hammocks. And the one I used came with wide webbing straps that protects the bark of trees, so no impact is there either. When using one of these hammocks instead of a tent, very little work is needed to insure a LNT campsite.
5. Perfect for hunting, fishing, biking, hiking, camping, and kayaking for recreational users. Also used a lot by forest fire fighters, emergency field hospitals, international disaster relief workers and as survival equipment for military and Search and Rescue personnel.
6. Come with mosquito netting and rain fly. On a clear night, you can leave the rain fly off, be protected by bugs while laying there enjoying the night sky. Creating total harmony with nature and the universe.
7. Can be used as a chair. You don’t have to use camping hammocks just as a bed, but can sit on top of them as a regular camp seat.

From this I could hang my watch, or better yet, a glow stick. Lets face it, it is dark! And waking up disoriented in a small space can be a little nerve wracking.
9. As I discovered, very unique. I was the envy of all the girl’s that year. Everybody wanted to try my camping hammock!

Cons:.

1. If you are claustrophobic, these would not be a good idea. Though there is room between you and the top of the hammock, it is definitely a closed in space.
2. They are only designed for one person. This is often fine, but sometimes you want to cozy up in a tent with a loved one.
3. Having used one of these while at camp with a bunch of teenage girls, you do feel more vulnerable to practical jokes. I was lucky, and was spared any pranks, but I still felt at risk all during camp.

As you can tell, in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons considerably. If you just need a tent for one person, camping hammocks is the way to go!.

16 people killed as flood sweeps through campsite

Flash floods have swept through a campground in Arkansas, killing at least 16 people as they slept and leaving an estimated 73 missing.

A wall of water, triggered by heavy rains that swelled the Little Missouri River to 20 feet, caught victims asleep in their tents at the Albert Pike campground in the Ouachita Mountains west of Little Rock.

The death toll hit 16, according to a spokesman for Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, who travelled to the scene of the flooding.

One survivor expressed horror at the fact that children were among the dead.

I got a bunch of boo-boos and stuff but it ain’t got nothing compared to the little babies that were screaming hard in the river, ‘Help me, Help me.’ We just couldn’t reach them, we had to climb about forty feet in a tree to save our own lives. We were just clinging on to dear life, Angela Chris said.

Television images showed cabins reduced to rubble and mobile homes and vehicles overturned by the waters.

The number one rule to follow is to never, under any circumstance, store food in or near your tent. This also includes any items that may smell like food. You will want to make sure this area is downwind from your sleeping area. And just remember to do all of your cooking, cleaning, and hanging out in the kitchen area. I like to designate one set of clothes to sleep in and change into them in this area.. Always make sure your food smelling items are stored properly. If your car is located near by it is a good idea to lock these items in the trunk of your car. Many campgrounds now offer storage bins to safely store your food smelling items. When you are deep in the country camping and you have no access to a storage bin or car, then all you will need is a tree and about 25 feet of rope. This way you can safely hang your gear in the tree for the night.. If for whatever reason there is no trees in the area you plan on camping in, there is bear proof canisters that you can purchase to store the food smelling items. These typically range from $25-$75 and can be found at most outdoor stores. This is also an easier alternative to hanging your food from a tree. Keep in mind that you still want to leave the container in your kitchen area, and not in your sleeping area. While the container might be bear proof, it’s not a chance you want to take..
